Zidane and Materazzi marked finale in Germany

Do you remember 18th, famous championship of the planet in Germany? Although you might not have known this, if it were not for the scandal during election of the host, likely we would have been watching the best teams in the world in 2006 in South Africa, and not only in 2010. But, about that scandal, as well as many other – there will be more once the story develops. And the story starts like this.

Zidane and Materazzi

In the last round of voting about whom would get to organize Mundial, Germans won against South Africa with 12:11, but only after many vicissitudes. Delegate of Oceania, Charlie Dempsey suddenly decided to abstain from voting in the final stage of election, expressing the incredible pressure that rose over that decision. If he had obeyed the instructions of his superiors, his vote would have gone to South Africa – in that case, it would have been a draw and president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, who said before the voting that the dearest thought to him was for World Cup to be held in Africa, would have decided about it personally.

The draw was no less unusual, because of all national teams, the one representing state union Serbia and Montenegro was put in a special hat, alone. It was done so the possibility of having three European teams in one of eight groups would have been avoided, and Heidi Klum gave her best for this-day football fans to remember her not only for her beauty, but for her “lucky hand”, since she sent national team of Serbia and Montenegro against Netherlands, Argentina and Cote d’Ivoire. In the end, no one from that “death group” came to the semifinals, in which were the surprise of the tournament, host Germany with rejuvenated composition, Portuguese who previously eliminated Dutchmen and Englishmen, and there were also Italians and Frenchmen craving for a new trophy.

The Azzurri could have gone home much earlier than they hoped, the same as Netherlands and Spain which stopped already in the first knockout stage, but in the 95th minute against Australia they managed to pry out a penalty through national hero, defender Fabio Grosso. Francesco Totti scored a goal from the “white spot” much to joy of Italy, but also a reporter got dismissed from national television in China because, as a big fan of Italian football, he got too carried away in describing his own joy during the broadcast.

Grosso was also scorer of a goal in the semifinals against Germany, this time in 119th minute before Del Piero confirmed departure of the Azzurri to the final, where the Tricolores came by eliminating Spaniards, Brazilians and Portuguese. The final battle for the trophy was marked with goals by Zidane and Materazzi, then their sparring and Zizou’s exclusion because of an anthology hit with head into chest of snappish defender who verbally provoked him. After that came penalty shots when “new Baggio” did not happen to Italy as against Brazil in 1994, but they came from the “white spot” to the fourth title thanks to unaccomplished penalty of Trezeguet.
