Germany vs Portugal Preview

This is probably the most serious matchup at the World Cup so far. Group G is one of the least certain at the tournament, and duel between two strongest teams is certainly the most important because it can determine the winner of the group. Germany and Portugal have never played against each other in a world championship, but their duels in other competitions were mostly uncertain. There are several reasons to believe that there will not be different in this game as well.

Germany is one of the few national teams which is in the circle of favorites at each World Championships. They came to Brazil as favorites again, not only because of tradition, but also because they have a very strong team that has finished qualifications for the World Cup with nine wins and one draw. With such a form, the outcome of the match against Portugal probably would not be uncertain, but the balance of power has changed a bit in the meantime because of numerous injuries of players of the German national team. Schmelzer, Lars, Sven Bender and Gomez were not invited by head coach Low, due to earlier injuries, while Lahm, Schweinsteiger and Neuer are on the list, but with fresh-healed injuries. Meanwhile, Marco Reus has suffered a serious injury, which is probably the hardest blow to the German team. Consequently, it is not easy to predict the starting line-up in the first game.

Probable line-up of Germany (4-2-3-1): Neuer – Lahm, Boateng, Mertesacker, Durm – Khedira, Schweinsteiger – Muller, Ozil, Gotze – Klose

Honestly, I do not have much confidence in the Portuguese national team, as a majority. Only one player, even if he is Cristiano Ronaldo may not be a measure of the strength of a team. I know, there are a few good players, such as Almeida, Nani and Coentrao, but this team’s playing just is not impressive. Qualifications and most friendly matches were suffering, except the last test when they won 5-1 against the Republic of Ireland. Their tactics are usually based on a solid defense and quick counter-attacks, and this is their only chance against a strong Germany, so Almeida will probably get an advantage over Postiga.

Probable line-up of Portugal (4-3-3): Patricio – Coentrao, Alves, Pepe, Pereira – Veloso, Meireles, Moutinho – Nani, Ronaldo, Almeida

Germany vs Portugal Match Prediction

The Germans have a lot of quality players who can replace injured starters, so Germany is my favorite in this game, and in addition I believe that the German team is able to save clean sheet. Germany to win. Both Teams to Score – No.
