Chile vs. Australia Preview

None of national teams at the World Cup is not a complete outsider, so not even the lowest ranked Australia cannot considered as already defeated against Chile. However, even a draw could be considered a great loss to Chile because they compete for the top two places in the Group B against teams such as Spain and the Netherlands. On the other hand, football in Australia is progressing from year to year, so no one can say in advance that the national team of this country is not able to make a surprise, at least qualifying for the knockout phase of the competition.

Chile has become a serious football team, competitive to strongest South American national teams, and thus one of candidates for a high ranking at this world championship. Replacing the head coach has contributed them to go out of the crisis in which this national team was at one time, so the won the third place in their qualifying zone without problems. Their preparatory matches against Egypt (3-2) and Northern Ireland (2-0) has showed that this team is still in good shape, but surgery of Vidal’s knee could jeopardize their aim at this championship. Vidal has arrived in Brazil, but I do not think we will see him in the first game, and maybe not even in one.

Probable line-up of Chile (3-4-3): Herrera – Medel, Mena, Rojas – Silva, Diaz, Carmona, Isla – Sanchez, Vargas, Valdivia

Australia is the 59th national team in the FIFA rankings, but as I already said, they are constantly progressing. We should not forget their passage into last 16 at the World Cup in Germany, although it seems impossible now given the strength of the Group B. Another problem is the absence of several national team players due to injuries, so I think that the role of Australia at this championship will be episodic.

Probable line-up of Australia (4-2-3-1): Ryan – Franjic, Spiranovic, Wilkinson, Davidson – Milligan, Jedinak – Leckie, Vidosic, Oar – Cahill

Even without Vidal Chile is potentially the biggest surprise of the World Cup in Brazil. They have a great team, a combination of experience and youth, which along with strong support from their fans will certainly win the three points in their first appearance at the championship. Chile -1 AH.
